Pre-Thanksgiving fun

The Tuesday before thanksgiving Russ was out of school really early and I didn't have class. We were planning to do a few things to get ready for our trip to Washington, but our plans were changed when I was asked to take one of my cub scouts out for the day to give his grandma a break. Cameron is a nice kid and a real talker if you get him started on Pokemon ( a subject which I hardly know anything about). Because of certain learning disabilities he can try one's patiences. But in all, he is a real sweet boy.

I had to think of something fun to do. Cameron would be completely happy just coming over and playing his Nintendo DS ( no clue what DS means) the whole time. But I would not be happy with that! It would be completely lame. With no kids of my own, I really didn't have anything at the house to entertain him with besides board games. And he really isn't the board game type. So instead, I got my neighbor Misty and her kids (who had the whole week off for Thanksgiving BTW!!!) and we went to the dog park. I don't know about the rest of them, but I had fun.

The first picture is Marriah trying to get Athena to jump over the jumping thingy. The next is Athena showing of her agility! haha.

For a while we were the only ones at the park which is sad because I think it would have been more fun for the kids with the 50 other dogs running around like there was the last time I went. But not to fear!! I had thought ahead and brought Crochet! My family used to play this all the time when I was a child and I loved it. Russell set us up a really crazy course.

Here are a couple other shots from the day. The kids in the Car and Misty and Marriah on the dog tunnel.

Russell's time off

Every couple of weeks there comes a day that I absolutely love!! This day is the Saturday after Russell's tests. This day is amazing because Russell has no excuse not to hang out with me. This day is free of time limits. This day is a day when Russell does not have the excuse of "I have to study". This day is one in which normal goings on are not acceptable. And that is why this day, post test Saturday, is my favorite day.

Our post test Saturday activity this time around was a nice pleasant bike ride. We headed down to the missions trail. Besides the Alamo, there are actually 4 other cool missions in San Antonio: Mission Concepcion, Mission San Jose, Mission San Jaun, and Mission Espada. These missions are spaced out a few miles apart near the San Antonio River. The missions trail is paved path which follows along this river. It's not really "beautiful" too look at. Some might argue that it's quite ugly. But the trail does have a few pleasing sections. Plus, it's away from the road. Overall its a nice ride.
The trail starts at Mission Concepcion and ends in 8.3 miles down at Mission Espada. Russell and I were feeling pretty good when we took off on our ride. When we got to Mission Espada, neither one of us was ready to turn around and head back home. So we kept going another 4 miles. We ended up on this nice "country" road. Country in that it was long, straight, surrounded by big fields, horses, kids riding four-wheelers, and very few passing cars. It was nice to feel away from the city.... even if we really weren't.

Once we turned around, we realized why the ride out had been so pleasant and easy. It was actually a very windy day. We eventually made it back after fighting the wind the whole 12 miles, but we were dead. Our legs were fatigued and our patooties a little saddle sore. Luckily, neither one of us experienced sore muscles the next day. Unfortunately, the seats at church were a little harder the usual.

We both slept very well that night.

Weekend in Utah

I'm not the best at making sure I take pictures of things. I missed a lot over the weekend while we were in Utah. But here are some of what I did get!
Tom and Mary's reception was fun. They didn't have a line, which was nice. But it meant I had to be quite the social butterfly to talk to everyone I knew. It's not particularly something I'm good at. But I did it, and I'm glad I did. I have so many cousins and relatives in Utah, one weekend and one evening really isn't enough. But I am grateful I was able to see everyone. The evening started out very formal. Mary's family are not members of our church, so they were not able to attend the temple ceremony. So we Tom and Mary had a big formal ring ceremony with bridal procession and everything!! Sorry, there are no good pictures of my dress below.

This picture is kinda funny since Tom has an extra head coming out of his chest.

Russ preparing the car with plastic wrap.

My windshield art work :). Wait a second. How did those get in there!!!

After the luncheon in the afternoon, Russ and I were waiting around for my parents so we could leave. We found a bench at the Law Building to wait on, but the beautiful leaves all around were much more appealing. So we played in them instead of sitting and waiting. We entertained ourselves for a half hour with the camera and the leaves.

We had a couple pictures like this. With a quick toss on ten and then a quick lean in for the flash. Yes I know, very posed.

This one is cool cuz it looks like we're in the middle of a fireball!

I often get a little dramatic.

I went to a Halloween bridal shower Friday night. So I went to DI and got this grrreat! costume. Mostly just the hat was great, but i liked it. Rachel thinks she is still a child and went trick or treating with her friends. These pictures were taken at about 11, I think, after we were both back from our festivities.

Rach looks AWESOME!

The vampire has bitten the fair cowbride and smiles with delight as the sweet blood trails down her pale face. All because two people fell in love......

Rach loves everything pumpkin, so I brought here my family's pumpkin cake recipe. We made it for breakfast Saturday morning. It was very satisfying with a glob of freshly whipped whip cream. mmmmm the joys of fall.

Started another blog

I started another blog today. Not for me, but for a friend. She's been saying for forever that she wanted to, so I finally got one going for her today. Check it out! tayloranddiane.blogspot.com

I will blame this on Rachel

Dearest wonderfulest greatest Rach,

if I fail my tests on Monday, I find comfort in knowing it really truly is not my fault! It is all yours. Maybe if you had offered a disclaimer like "may cause addiction" to your text message last week, it wouldn't be your fault. But you didn't. So you have no way to get out of this one. Thank you for such a wonderful suggestion on how to pass my already hard to come by time. While I should be studying for my two tests, and researching for my presentation in a couple of weeks, as well as sewing the hem and a zipper into my dress for my brothers wedding in two weeks, I have not done any of this. Instead, I have wasted away the hours thoroughly enjoying myself. Yesterday I had the excuse of "just get through it so you can focus on school". I don't have such a great excuse today. I thank you for this glorious addiction, but must reiterate again how much you are to blame.

Thanks,
Kim

ps. Jane Eyre rules!!! Not only is it an amazing book, but now there is an amazing movie of it too. If you have a day with no other plans, watch this movie. And be sure to get the 2006 version cuz the old A&E version just doesn't quite do it right.

Stepping out of Character for just a little bit.

I am normally not a very political person. I don't talk politics. I don't talk issues. I have my own strong beliefs, values, understandings, and opinions on many issues, but I am not one tell them freely to others. In a political or idealogical conversation, I usually just ask questions about the other person's opinions in order to understand why they believe a certain way. I'm not really one to express my own. I'm someone who hates controversy. It makes me almost sick to think about having to argue with people. I feel I am not articulate enough in order to express myself in just the right way. I am the kind of person who does not enjoy competition. Ask anyone who has ever played board games with me.

With all that in mind, what I am about to do is COMPLETELY out of character for me.

I support Marriage in California. I grew up in California and I remember the big push to pass Prop. 22 in 2000. This proposition did not add or take away any rights. It simply defined marriage as something between a man and a woman. While in most political circumstances the church remains neutral and does not push its agenda, for Prop. 22, leaders of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints wrote to the members urging them to vote for this proposition. In May of this year, the California supreme courts over ruled this proposition. Voters in California this year are voting on Prop. 8 now, which again redefines marriage as between a man and a woman. Homosexual couples already have every right and ability that married couples have in California. The only difference is the name that is put upon it. But whatever name the relationship contract between homosexual couples might have, carries even great implications with it.

In the scriptures, it says that prophets are to be our watchmen on a tower, warning us of what is ahead. The Prophet Thomas S. Monson of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has warned members of the dangers for the family that will occur if this proposition does not change. On October 8th, the church gave a special broadcast to Californians on Prop 8. Here is a clip from the special October 8th broadcast from the Church to Californians.

Here is another link to a website that list consequences of this proposition.
http://www.preservingmarriage.org/

Here is a video clip from the Vice-Presidential debate.

Here is a video of Elder Bednar from the the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints speaking with young adults about this issue.

This is a topic I feel strongly about. This issue is both moral and religious. In this way it is issue about rights that is so much different that those fought for in the recent past for equal and civil rights. No one is denying the rights of homosexual couples. They are denying the change of definition of something they hold sacred. I really wish that I were still registered in California to vote. I urge those who can vote in California to vote yes on Prop. 8.

Great news

My older brother is now officially engaged. Tom and Mary are getting married November 1st in the Provo temple. I'm way excited to go to Utah for....2 days maybe. I'm very very very excited to have a new sister in-law on my side of the family. I'll no longer be the only married child!! And thus ends my short stint at pretending to be the "oldest" child. With him married, I'll no longer be a step ahead of him.

I first met Mary last thanksgiving. My whole family flew in to San Antonio, and Tom brought Mary. She was so much fun to hang out with. We froze together watching the guys play football Thanksgiving morning. She fit right in. She was here for her birthday, so we bought her one of those big balloon towers at HEB. It was interesting getting that home in a truck full of people. It only fit with the window open. She also flew out to Washington with the rest of us for new years. She's been tons of fun to hang out with and get to know. I'm excited for the years ahead of family get togethers to get to know her even more.

A break from the Texas pride in a place that truely is better!

The title is purely for the purpose of rubbing Texas proud people the wrong way... like my husband.

But really, what could be better than a vacation away from the Texas heat and humidity? A vacation that takes you to California and home to visit parents, family, and friends of course! And thats just what I got. The break was much needed and much too short.

I flew in on August 18th, my mom's birthday. My parents and my brother and sister, Tom and Anna, picked me up from the San Fransisco airport around 4:30ish. We picked up Highway 1, the pacific coast highway, and drove down to Half Moon Bay. My mom is a marine biologist. She did a lot of snorkeling and tide pool research while in school at BYU Hawaii. Half Moon Bay has some great tide pools, and our timing was perfect with the low tide. It was so much fun exploring the pools, checking out hermit crabs, star fish, crabs, California muscles (not to be confused with dudes on the beach), rocks, snails, poking at sea anemones, and watching the see lions out of the furthest rocks. I really love the ocean. There are so many different, interesting, and beautiful things in it.

These were my favorite hermit crab shells there. They were vibrantly orange in and out of the water.

My sister spotted this cool purple crab crawling around. It looked pink in the water. But once you pulled it out, it was purple. Pretty nifty. We kept telling Tom that it as long as he grabbed it from behind, it couldn't pinch his fingers off. He was very brave. Once we pulled it out of the water though, we found that someone or something had already pulled the crabs pinchers off, so Tom really had nothing to be brave about!

After leaving the tide pools, we continued on highway one, just enjoying the view of the drive, and looking for a place for dinner. We ended up at a restaurant right on the cliff. We ate outside looking out over a beautiful ocean view. The food was great, lots of fish, seafood, and chowder of course. It was fun to just sit and talk to my family. We're really silly when we're together, laughing over old things we used to do and teasing each other. We talked over ways to convince Russell to move out there after medical school.
For my mom's birthday, my older brother, Tom, compiled pictures of our family and created a slide show. My brother's goal for this slide show was to "make mom cry". He did an amazing job and was able to accomplish the mom crying goal. It was the perfect mix of humor and serious. It was fun to watch the pictures of us kids growing up together, as well as pictures from old family vacations. The night was nearly perfect. The only thing that could have made it better was if my younger brother, Scott, was there. But thats ok, he's on his mission like he should be.

Two more things I will really miss about home: eating perfectly ripe peaches (my favorite fruit) right off the tree and cool crisp-air nights wrapped tightly in blankets.

A Favorite Dessert

Thai Coconut Sticky Rice with Mango.

Oh it makes my mouth water just thinking about it. Since I'm currently in the processes of making some, I thought I'd share the deliciousness. I feel like I grew up on this stuff. My mom served her mission for our church in Thailand. Growing up we didn't eat out much, pretty much never, but when and if we did we always ALWAYS went to Thai food. It's just that good! And after eating such good food, you can't pass up such a great finish! I really don't like mango, but I love it on sticky rice.

Sticky rice, also called glutinous rice, is a special rice from Thailand. Grocery stores rarely ever carry it, so I have to go to the Asian market to find it. When it's all cooked, it is, true to its name, very sticky. Here is a link to what Wikipedia has to say about it.

I've been trying out various recipes but I couldn't find one that quite tasted as rich. My mom recently found this one, and it's really quite good. http://whatscookingamerica.net/Fruit/MangoStickyRice.htm

If you plan to make it, you need to plan ahead since the rice is best when soaked over night. The recipe lists mint leaves and sesame seeds as a garnish. It's plenty good without them. I don't think i've ever really had it served to me with mint leaved before.

my stumbling block: Pride

My family and maybe some close friends know this about me. It's kinda been on my mind lately, so I'd thought I would share it.

I get really really stubborn and almost spiteful when people compel me to do stuff. Especially when it is something that I want to do, or feel I should be doing, or feel like I'm already an expert on how to do it. If someone brings it up and tells me to do it before I am able to do it myself, I can't do it any longer. (wow thats a lot of "do it" 's) Even when I know that the person is right, I have to find some other method or completely different way to do the same thing. Mostly I guess it's people telling me what to do, or how I should do things, when I feel pretty strongly about how to do it myself. For example, when I was a miamaid, all the young women went to stay at a ward member's cabin in Tahoe so that we could go sledding and tubing. For breakfast, I was given the task of cooking the bacon. I've always prided myself that my mom taught me how to cook. There was a lot of bacon to cook and we were at a high altitude. I knew that because of these factors, cooking the bacon in a griddle would take FOREVER! So I started to prepare to zap them in the microwave. Along came sister B. ( no clue how to spell her name) with "you need to cook it on the stove blah blah blah blah blah". I got very angry. I'm sure I told her my reasons for cooking it in the microwave. But she insisted, at which point, I became very angry. Since it was the Young Women's leader, I couldn't really argue with her. So I very spitefully cooked it her way, the whole time complaining to my friend how it was taking an hour to cook the bacon her way when I could have done it in a couple of minutes. This same type of story happened again as we were moving into our house. After describing how I wanted to arrange things in my kitchen, I was told by someone a "better" way to arrange the kitchen from a "home Ec.expert point of view". Instead of considering this point of view and kindly discussing it, I got so angry I broke down with tears and had to walk away really quick so that this person couldn't have another one-up on me by seeing me cry.
It's so bad, that it even happens with friendly advice.... Whats worse, is it happens with friendly advice that I've asked for. This is where I used to get frustrated with my parents when they would help me on my homework when I was younger. I would ask a simple question like, "how do you do this math problem" or if it was my mom "how should I finger this on the piano?" (now this part is just how I felt, not necessarily how the situation actually was) I would get sooo angry when they would give me the answer I wanted, and then explain it. I didn't ask for the explanation! I used to say a lot of "i'm not stupid Mom!".
I'd like to say that I've over come this, and maybe to some extent I have. But in a lot of ways I haven't. Mostly, this behavior is manifested toward my parents. But in reality, I think it's toward anyone I feel vulnerable to or who has some sort of imagined "power" over me. Good thing power is divided pretty equally between Russ and I in our marriage. And to all my friends, this really isn't something you should worry about since I don't feel i'm not in the middle of a power struggle with any of you. Part of overcoming you bad habits and problems is accepting that there is a problem in the first place. So by putting this out there for everyone, this is me accepting that this is something I need to work on, because you really can't scream "i'm not stupid" at everyone.

not at your beckon call

Yesterday something happened to my phone. It was fine all day. I left it home while we went to the lake, so it's not accidental water damage. I stuck it in my pocket before we went to dinner with friends at Rudy's. It was still working when we came home after dinner and picked up my organ gear. It worked when we drove over to the church to practice. When I finished practicing, I pushed lots of buttons, but the screen wouldn't light up. It works when I plug it in. But as soon as it is unplugged, it turns off. Russ figures it my battery since he traded our batteries and my phone worked fine while his stopped working. So there you have it. I am no longer taking phone calls. Just making calls. If you want to get a hold of me, leave a voice message or a text message. Otherwise I'll have no idea you called :)

Excuses

I thought maybe i'd list a lot of excuses for why I haven't been blogging lately. But then I decided not to. The biggest one is that I just haven't felt like it. I finally told Russell last Sunday that it was his job to do the next post. He said he tried yesterday then texted me with "i got nothin". So the task has fallen back into my lap.

So mostly this is a post just for the sake of posting. It's nothing exciting. No awesome news. No adventurous story. No travel documentary. Perhaps I'll do a list....

-I'm avoiding Breaking Dawn. I know that if I get started on it, I wont do anything else. And I have a few "anything elses" to do. Mostly the biggest thing standing in my way is that I have to trudge my way through The Fellowship of the Ring by Friday. Then I have a short 3-5 page paper due a week from today. Plus two finals next Tuesday and Wednesday. After that, my 2 week summer vacation will finally begin!!! I've found it really hard to motivate myself to do any schoolwork lately. It's just the end of summer school and I"m ready for a break. I just have to hold out for another week!! and then Breaking Dawn you are mine!!! .......i've developed a little guilty pleasure in sentence mapping. Who'd have ever thought I would enjoy a grammar class so much!!!!.....

I'm excited for my two week break in school. Hopefully it will be enough before I start another 18 credits in the fall. My first weekend off we're heading out to Austin to babysit our nieces and nephews for a few days. We're excited to spend time with those cute kids. We are kinda bummed about missing our stake conference with Russell M. Nelson (or is it M. Russell Ballard... it's Russell something!) coming to speak to us. We had to turn down our spots in the "special" stake choir. I think I'm a little more bummed about that than Russell is. But the kiddos will be fun too.

Next I'm flying out to Morgan Hill to visit my parents and sister. My older brother will be visiting too! I'm flying out on Aug. 18th, which is my mom's birthday. August is a fabulous month in California. I can't wait to hit up In-N-Out, Sunset Beach, the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, maybe go scuba diving with my dad and visiting cousins, maybe do a quick trip to hike in Yosemite, and so much more. I'm super excited because my good friend/ old roommate/ sister in-law is coming with me. I'll also of course be visiting with old friend and spending time with my family that I miss more and more while I live out here in distant Texas. I can't wait until I graduate so that we can vacation at the same time.

I fly back from California the day before I start classes again. I'm sort of dreading the fall semester. While I did really well my last 18 credit house semester, I barely came out alive. But i'm determined to do it so that my last and final semester of school (when i'll be absolutely sick of school) will be a breeze.

So thats whats going on.

Update

Yes they're still in my garden. No I don't know what to do about it.

But on a happier note, I'm thankful for nice bus drivers who are willing to run you down a block away in order to give you your phone that you left on the bus.

garden frusterations

We have truly loved having a garden. It's a great feeling to be able to eat something you've grown. But of course gardening doesn't come without its frustrations.

Our tomatoes have been under attack. Our back yard must be a paradise for grackles ( very ugly loud obnoxious bird). Sometimes we come home and the back tree is full of them squawking and screeching. They never bothered me so much until I found out how persistent they would be to eat my tomatoes. It was an exciting day when we noticed our first tomato just beginning to turn a rosy color. It was quite depressing to go out the next day and find it half eaten.

So we set out trying to protect out endangered fruit. At home, farmers drape tinsel all over their vineyards to scare away the bird. The flashing metallic strands blow in the wind and scare the birds off. I thought i'd give it try. I picked up cheap pie tins and the dollar store around the corner and tied them to my tomato stakes. Not only did they blow and flash in the wind, they were also noisy and clanky!!!

Just to add a little bit more pizazz to it all, we built a scare crow. It's what they do in the movies, so it must be fool proof.

Obviously there would be no post if this all worked. Sure enough, the grackles got into our tomatoes again. They really are brave little buggers! We had to resort to what I had been avoiding since the beginning.... netting the plants. I didn't want to net the plants since it would make it harder to pick the tomatoes. Plus it was another ten dollars I didn't want to spend if I didn't have to.

So the net worked to keep the birds out. Thankfully. This morning I went out to pick our precious tomatoes. I had a couple huge tomatoes and a couple smaller ones I'd been keeping an eye on. After crawling under the nets, I was met again with disappointment. The nets did a fantastic job at keeping the birds out. But there was another little pest getting my tomatoes. And while I didn't see the pest myself, I saw the evidence and know exactly what it was. Last fall we had this ivy weed growing up the side of our house. One day I noticed it, and the next day it was gone. But on the remaining vines were HUGE caterpillar things. Bright green, longer than my longest finger, and as big around as a quarter. They dropped little black pellets all over the ground underneath. A few months later, I found the same huge caterpillars demolishing my pretty flowers in the front of my house. The plant just simply disappears. This morning, the first thing I noticed after crawling under the net was the black pellets on the ground around my plants. The sight of these brought a sinking feeling to my stomach. I examined further and found leafless branches on the plants as well. And last but not least, my huge tomatoes were half eaten!! I searched all over the plants and could not find a single caterpillar though. So this is my hope (crossing fingers). I'm hoping that somehow they died from eating my plants. This is why I think this isn't completely unreasonable: Russell noticed a few days ago one tomato that looked like it had been chomped on by some critter. If the caterpillars were eating my plants a few days ago, the plants would have been completely eaten up by now. They really eat that fast!! But since my plants are still around, (still crossing fingers) i'm hoping that tomatoes are poisonous to these nasty beasts. I'm going to be keeping a keen eye on things though for the next few days......

Enchiladas

Russ and I tried a new enchilada sauce this week. And it was delicious! So I thought I would share it. I found it on allrecipes.com. I like this site because you can search for recipes, but at the bottom people can leave comments, corrections, or additions.

For the meat, we just cooked it with taco seasoning, onions, and garlic. You just wrap that up with cheese inside a tortilla and then pour this delicious sauce over the top.

INGREDIENTS
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 cup diced onion
  • 3 tablespoons chopped garlic
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 3 to 5 teaspoons of chili powder depending on how hot you want the sauce
  • 4 1/2 cups chicken broth
  • 1/2 (1 ounce) square semisweet chocolate

DIRECTIONS

  1. Heat oil in a large saucepan over medium-high high heat. Saute onion until tender. Stir in garlic, oregano, cumin and cinnamon; saute for a few minutes.
  2. Stir in flour and chili powder, stirring until sauce thickens. Slowly whisk in chicken broth; reduce until sauce reaches desired consistency. Stir in chocolate until melted and well blended.

help wanted

I have a project due for school this weened. It's a choice between writing a 10 page paper, or doing some other project ( my teacher keeps suggesting a poster but I can't see how a poster is logically equal to a 10 page paper). She told me for my topic, I need to do a website. WHAT??? I have no clue how to create a website. And I'm unsure how much of it needs to be my own creation. I don't know if it can be as simple as using blogger in a fancy way, or actually creating some kind of site. Also, I have no idea how to do the whole html stuff. I'm good at copying the codes and pasting them where I want, but designing my own page? no clue. Plus, she said she would email me by yesterday after looking over my topic proposal to give me more direction on my topic and information on creating a web page. has she? no. It's due Friday. I've got 4 days.

Something to blog about finally

I've been trying to get this post out since the day we got back, but Blogger was being weird. But thats ok cuz it's working fine now. So here goes.

Russ and I went camping this past weekend. It was a really quick but really fun trip. AND!! I remembered to take the camera, and even better, take pictures. This was a long needed break for the both of us. After the last year of school, we were both feeling the need to just take off and chill and enjoy ourselves. What better way to do that than at the beach! I grew up going to the beach pretty often. It's one of my favorite things to do. I love the feeling of the sand underneath my feet while walking around barefoot, I love playing in the waves, collecting sea shells, and gathering around a fire. Since living in Texas, the opportunities for going to the beach have been few and far between. So when Russ and I had a chance to plan a weekend trip, I knew exactly what I wanted to do. Plus it was my birthday, so I would win out anyway.

We had originally planned to leave around 4 after I got home from school, and Russell got home from doing his research. However, like all trips, this did not happen. Russell unexpectedly had to stay about 2 hours later. And while I had most things ready to go once he got home, talking on the phone with my mom while waiting for him made it hard to get everything done. So we got out around 6 instead. It took us pretty close to 3 hours to drive out to North Padre National Sea Shore, but with good music, company, excitement, and pretty scenery, the drive passed pretty quickly. We drove right out on the sand, found a spot of beach we liked, and parked the truck (driving on sand feels a lot like driving on snow). Needless to say we got there after dark. Which means we had to set up our tent in the dark (with flashlights of course), and cook our dinner in the dark. Luckily, when we purchased out tent a week earlier, we set it up in our excitement in our front room, so we already knew how the pieces and joints all fit together. While we cooked out dinner, Athena had a great time digging holes underneath our table we had her tied to (worked out great the next morning for starting our charcoal in).
With full bellies, we went to bed. The storms the past week really worked well to cool down the air, the only thing making sleeping outside a possibility. We got a reasonably good sized tent (not huge though) which made it so that we could stick Athena on one side, and we'd sleep on the other. The logic of having her in the tent was so that, since there are other critters like coyotes and crabs and such running around, she wouldn't be barking at them all night. And when she does on occasion sleep inside the house, she just stays in one spot the whole night. So we really didn't think it would be a problem. But it was. Half way through the night, we was up wandering around the tent, stepping on us, as she jumped from window to window trying to see out. Then she started trying to actually jump out the windows, which was obviously impossible since they are made out of mesh. But for some reason, she couldn't quite grasp that, and kept trying regardless. Tired of being stepped on and having his sleeping space invaded by a dirty hairy dog, Russ finally tied her in the back of the truck for the rest of the night. Surprisingly enough, she didn't make a noise!!! Every once in a while I'd look out the window and she would be all perked up, listening to the night.
Morning came, and we realized we forgot lighter fluid for starting our charcoal for our delicious dutch oven breakfast. So we walked down to the visitors center/ lodge that had a little camp store to purchase the needed product. After getting there, we found that the store didn't open until nine. We had left around 7 to walk down there, but we didn't bring any kind of clock, and so we had no idea what time it was. So we walked about. We got back at 8:50, so Russell decided to just drive down while I got breakfast ready to be cooked. I spent all last week seasoning my new dutch oven by cooking anything with fat in it. But once we got there, I decided to put down tin foil inside it anyway just to be safe. I wasn't sure if it was seasoned enough for the sugar to not ruin all the seasoning I had done. Our apple crisp breakfast came out perfect and very delicious. The best part about using the tin foil, is that it made clean up super easy.
The rest of the day was spent playing on the beach. The storms brought in a lot of sea weed (which Athena loved rolling in). But it didn't really bother us since it didn't really stink and wasn't rotting yet. We made a cool sand castle with our dishes. In the center is a pyramid, surrounded by a wall, surrounded by a seaweed filled moat, which even had a bridge over it. It was quite fun. We planned to make more sand sculptury stuff too, but didn't get around to it. After the sand castle, we got in the water. It was nice and warm. Not uncomfortable in any way. I thought that it was cool that when the waves wash away from your feet, it exposes all these teeny tiny clam thingies that then scurry to rebury themselves. At first glance I thought they were just really colorful rocks. The last of cool shells at the beach was a bit disappointing however, since I am a collector. But thats ok since the water was so nice. Athena was a little timid... ok a lot timid at first, and wouldn't even go near the water. But after seeing us run through it, she quickly followed. I'm not sure who had more fun running through the waves, Russ or Athena. She swallowed a lot of air and water throughout the whole thing, which made her look really bloated and pregnant when we were done. She could hardly move she was so uncomfortable. On our way out of camp, we stopped again at the lodge just to rinse off. We were also a little concerned about Athena throwing up in the back on our stuff. So we devised a plan. Have Athena drink lots of water and then run laps around the parking lot until she threw up. It only took about 10 steps, and the plan worked. She still looked bloated, but she was able to hold it in on the trip home. And by the time we got home, she didn't look bad. Thanks everyone for all the happy birthday messages that I got once I had reception again on my phone.
We got into San Antonio about 5pm. About 5 minutes from our house, we decided that we wanted to go to Sea World. We called up Phil and Lindsey, and went to ride roller coasters at Sea World after a quick dump of gear at the house. This quick dump, of course, has left our house a disaster zone.
After Sea World, Russ and I went to Jason's deli (only thing open) for dinner, then came home and he gave me my birthday presents--the move Emma and a popcorn popper. (I had been craving this popper since every time Ann-Marie makes pop corn while we're there, I can't stop eating it. From my mom, I got a really really nice set of about 15 different kinds of Ginger scissors (really nice sewing scissors). They're in a nice wooden box which my mom got my named inscribed on.

And that was our pleasant weekend. Here are a few more pictures from it.

Athena just chilling on the sand. She looked so comfortable.

Athena let me bury her. I was quite surprised.

Us on the drive home. Hurray for beach hair.
