Just a few

Bennett likes to sleep with his hands above his head during the day.

But he often wakes himself up rubbing his face like this. So at night he sleeps tightly wrapped in a swaddle.

Over conference weekend Bennett enjoyed the attention of his Grandma Hill and three Duke cousins. Here he is with his oldest cousin.

I can tell he is getting stronger every day. This first picture was taken on October 11th.

This one was taken October 26th. He is holding his head up better and is a lot less "sack-o-potatoes" like in the second picture. 15 days makes a big difference!

Bennett is working on mastering the art of finding a thumb to suck. He does quite well. However, he prefers a pacifier as it does not randomly flail and rip out of his mouth during peaceful slumber like a thumb does. Unless of course his thumb and fingers are also gripping the pacifier. Which is often the case.

This is Bennett helping me fold laundry.

He's got rythmn

I put Bennett in his crib this morning and turned on his mobile to distract him while I did a few things. His legs just kept kicking and kicking the whole time the music was going. Obviously the mobile lullaby just makes him want to dance instead of sending him off to visit the sandman.

Also, notice how that long sleeved 0-3 month onesie I put him in just drowns him. The leg wholes leave plenty of room for his thighs to expand. And when it's not bunched up around his next, it's about 3 inches too long.

Wow. He is 4 weeks old tomorrow. Other people still keep saying "he's so tiny!" but I swear he seems so much bigger.

He does super well in the morning. Always happy and alert.

He likes his bath (sink) time. However, he's getting a little to long for our sink. I have to be careful so that when he kicks off one side of the sink, his head does not ram the other side. I've been able to perfect the quick water to towel transition so he does not get upset when I take him out.

Just kicked back taking a good nap and letting the sun show off my orange hair (I love that).

Remembering High School

High school. I have a lot of mixed feelings about my green and gold days. There are lots of things I would like to forget. But of course, there are also lots of things I'd like to remember.

My high school's mascot is memorable to me. We were the mighty Acorns! Our battle cry was "BUST A NUT!" I think that competing schools came up with it first, but we accepted it and took it as our own. Our boys water polo team had "we bust ours to kick yours" written across the front and the back of their speedos. So mature I know. (I just looked at my High School's website and it looks as though the faculty have toned it done to "go nuts!") Anyhow, I bring this up because one of my fellow Live Oakian Alumni recently posted a link to an interesting blog. The post is from a blog called Mental Floss. 31 Unbelievable High School Mascots. I am very proud of my school for making this short list. Thank you Mental Floss. It really is an honor.

However, I do believe that a neighboring schools in Hollister, San Benito High School, should have also made the cut since their mascot is the Hollister Hay Baylers.

2 Week Check Up

Yesterday Bennett went to the pediatrician for his two week check up. I am proud to announce that Bennett is thriving. He's gained a pound since we left the hospital and currently weighs in at 7lbs 6ounces. Bennett is 21 1/2 inches long. He's grown a whole inch since birth! We are very proud of our little achiever.

Bennett continues to amuse us. He has a lot of awake time during the day where he just stares and stares either out the window, at the ceiling fan, or at our goofy faces. I know I'm probably just a little too excited, but I swear he kinda smiled at me today when I was making some squealing noises at him. At least I know that he didn't have any gas at the time. He has a pretty good milk drunk face that he gives me in the middle of the night when he falls back asleep after eating. It's a huge open mouth grin while his eye lids flutter open and his eyes are rolled back into his head.

First days pictures

Sorry I haven't posted anything yet. I was working on one at the hospital but there were so many people coming in and out all day that it just never got done. BUT! Russ did just make a photo album today. http://picasaweb.google.com/russellmhill Feel free to check them out. Russ isn't as picky about how "flattering" the photo is.

Bennett's first day

Bennett Isaac Hill was born at 9:55 am on Wednesday 9-16-09. He weighed in at 6 lbs 15 ounces and he's 20 1/2 inches long. He and Kim are both doing fantastic. We are so blessed to have him join our family. Kim and I feel so grateful for everyone's prayers and support. Both Bennett and Kim are healthy and happy. Stay tuned and we'll keep you updated with more pictures and stories.

Reality coming up fast

We are now down to the LAST week. At my doc appointment yesterday my doctor set up a tentative inducement date for Sept 16th. So basically, come next Wednesday, Bennett will be officially forced out of his home where he seems quite content. Unless or course he decides to give up peacefully and come on his own. I have a feeling he wont. My official due date is the 14th. The doctor says that I'm "almost" two centimeters dilated. But this suborn baby seems freaked out by the light at the end of the tunnel. So instead of dropping like he's supposed to, he's keeping his distance. Also, I really don't get many Braxton Hicks. Or at least I don't feel them unless I just happen to have my hand on my stomach when it decides to knot up. It seems a whole lot closer now that there is an actual day to schedule in on my calandar.

solitary confinement

I need some ideas on how to pass all this time I have at home just waiting...

I've cleaned my house multiple times. I'm getting tired of this because it always seems to get uncleaned even faster.

I've pretty much finished all the projects I've been working on. I'm not really in the mood to start yet another one.

I've been doing lots of walking. Pretty much twice a day; once in the morning with friends, and once in the even with Russ.

I've practiced the piano a lot lately. This just makes me depressed that I'm not taking lessons these days.

I've given my dog multiple baths. Usually she's lucky if I give her a bath once every 6 months.

Everything is pretty much ready and waiting for this little guy to get here. My mind is blank. What am I supposed to do with myself for the next possibly and probably two and half weeks?!?! I'm so jealous of Russ that he can go to school and have other things to think about all day. I feel like I waste way to much time mindlessly perusing the internet completely bored and uninterested in most the stuff I look at just to pass the time. I need some distraction. I need a routine. I NEED some structure. Otherwise I think i'm going to go insane just waiting for things to get moving around here.

Check it!

Check out my Sis in-law's photography blog. Not only does she just rock, but she also put up some maternity pictures she took of me last weekend. I'm glad she gave the info on me at the top. Otherwise I think someone might mistake me as being 12 years old. http://kristendukephotography.blogspot.com/

loves/ weaknesses

Two things I love, have always loved, and can never get enough of.

1. Instant chocolate pudding. Russ keeps a "secret" stash hidden in the house somewhere so that he doesn't have to make grocery store runs whenever I get the craving. No, not to be confused with a pregnancy craving. These urges have been around a lot longer than that.

Of course, we must not confuse instant chocolate pudding heaven with these. Snack packs are COMPLETELY different in taste and texture from instant chocolate pudding. These are actually closer to a dislike than to a like. But they are definitely not a despise. An example of a despise would be mushrooms.

2. This

Plus this

Enough said. Frozen York mints are divine. I blame this love on my grandparents because they always always always had some stashed in the freezer somewhere. You just had to make sure you didn't let grandma catch you snitching more....

But of course, these two delicatessens can't replace my love for this George of the jungle.

Blah Blah Blah Graduation

Hurray I graduated in May. Here's a quick picture glimpse of the weekend. My parents and my sister as well as Russell's Parents all felt like it was something to make a big deal about and came out for the big event.

This is me thinking to myself "Russell is being really obnoxious thinking he might be able to get a good picture of me in this ridiculously unflattering hat".

Oh the love and too much attention after the ceremony!

We had fun watching our parents try and play Rock Band on the Wii. Entertaining!

Another scorpion meets it's doom vs. our scorpion slayer.

Saturday we went to Mission Conception. This is my favorite mission of all the San Antonio missions. It kicks the Alamo's buttocks.

Pedernales Falls State Park: Saturday June 20th

The Saturday before Russ went back to school, we went to Fredericksberg and Pedernales Falls. Fredericksberg is a small German town about an hour away. The main thing to do there is go to all the shops all along the main street. Shops and shopping in general is not really up mine or Russell's alley. So we did a quick walk through, yawned, and then found a German restaurant for lunch. The restaurant was fantastic. There is something about sauerkraut that just hits the spot. You can go months and months without it and then all of a sudden it becomes a need. After fulfilling that need, you are set for months again. My schnitzel was quite delicious as well. And that's all I have to say about Fredricksberg.

After lunch, we drove out to Pedernales Falls. It was a scorching weekend. Temperatures were definitely over 100 degrees. Despite the heat we still enjoyed the hike. There were a lot of cool different lizards. It was fun to watch them run around on the hot sand. I'm assuming it was because the ground was so hot that they look more like they were skipping as they ran with their tails held really high. The sand down at the falls was HOT! It was not fun to have such hot sand get stuck in your sandals.

There were some nice views from the falls. The water was a bright green and the trees on the waters edge were beautiful.

28 weeks

Up on the "falls" we climbed all over the rocks until we couldn't stand the heat any longer. I think rock formations always look cool. It's amazing how time and water can shape and smooth and carve out big heavy boulders.

After hiking we went over to another section of the river where you could swim. We didn't bring Athena even though we had originally planned to because we read online that dogs were not allowed in the swimming hole. I wish we had brought her anyway since there were lots of dogs there. ( There were three tough looking Mexican guys with well groomed poodles all with painted red toe nails. Interesting...)She would have loved swimming! Oh well, it gives us another reason to go back. The water was warm. It would have been nice for it to be a little cooler since it was so scorching hot outside, but it was refreshing enough. We remembered to bring our waterproof disposable camera from our Amistad trip so that we could use the last two pictures before developing the film.

Lake Amistad: April 30-May 2

I love to go camping.

Unfortunately, we are not able to go very often due to the combination of living in Texas and being in school. Camping in the summer in Texas is not pleasant. It's hard for us to find time any other time of the year because of school. In May we found some time. Russ had just finished school, and I was on my study break before finals so we packed up and left Thursday morning and headed out to Lake Amistad.

Lake Amistad is right next to Del Rio which is a town right on the border of Mexico and Texas. It took us about three hours to get there. (Side note: This was right around the same time that the Swine Flu was really freaking people out. At one point we stopped in Walmart at around noon hoping to get hand sanitizer. After searching all over, we couldn't find a single bottle. The cashier pointed to an empty little blue swimming pool and said that that morning it had been over flowing with bottles of hand sanitizer.) As we drove in, we stopped at the visitors center to get information on activities and a map of the park since we basically headed out without any set plans besides play at the lake by day and sleeping in our tent under the stars at night. On the way to our camp site we stopped at this old retired couples house where they ran a small kayak rental. They were super nice and let us rent a two person kayak for two days for the price of one. This worked out awesome since kayaking ended up being our main activity. All Kayaking pictures are not the best quality because we just used a little waterproof disposable camera instead of risking our nice camera.

Our campsite was pretty secluded. The reservoir was really high and so the water came right up to our campground. This created a kind of "marsh" where the water had flooded the trees and brush. Our Thursday evening activity was kayaking through this area. We saw all kinds of wildlife up close and personal such as turtles and bright colored birds. This one small bird had a really loud call that caught our attention. We watched it as it circled about 50 feet above the water and then all of a sudden dove down and caught little fish. Kayaking through the "marsh" was also an adventure as we tried not to get stuck on trees hanging out just below the surface of the water (kinda spooky to look down at those) or stuck inside trees with huge needle like thorns. A two person kayak just doesn't have the maneuvering capabilities of a single person kayak.

Another thing we really liked about our campsite was that we had an armadillo neighbor who kept visiting. It came to say "hi" in the middle of the day a couple times, and we're pretty sure it's what was creeping around our tent at night. It ate the huge red killer sized ants that also shared out campsite.

While planning our trip, we were worried about it being too hot to sleep at night. For those of you not in Texas, this might sound crazy since this was the end of April/ beginning of May. It is a sad fact that Texas is HOT. Once the sun went down, however, it cooled right off. And with the tent cover removed, there was a nice breeze and a spectacular view of the night sky to fall asleep to. You definitely cannot find a bright starry view like that anywhere near San Antonio.

Friday, after a breakfast of bacon and eggs cooked by camp chef Russell, we headed off to explore. Before the sun was able to burn off the cloud cover, we went hiking at nearby Seminole Canyon State Park & Historic Site. This park was pretty neat. It is pretty much a dry river canyon with huge cave openings in the cliffs at the bends of the canyon where the water had washed out the limestone. The ancient Texas Indians used these caves as dwelling places, protecting them from the severe elements of the dessert in which they lived. They left behind lots and lots of cave paintings, or pictographs. The guided hike took us down into this scenic canyon and the guide also tried to explain a few of the pictures. Pretty much everything he said seemed like a huge guess from somebody a little more educated. How does one really know that the humanoid figure with an elk head holding a staff with a big orb on top know that this depicts the tribe shaman transformed into an animal on a vision quests that began after passing through the portal on the top of his staff? Load of rubbish or fact? There really is no real way of knowing since we don't have many clues into their culture left behind. However, it was still very interesting to guess how they were able to paint so high up and also to see remnants of life left behind such as blackened spots on the cave ceiling from fires and smoothed boulders from skinning animals. Our guide also made us experts on the poisonous and edible plants in the dessert as well as handy things to do with a piece of cactus like making a purse or a water canteen or sewing needles. I can't remember if these millipedes were edible or not, but there were HUNDREDS of them all around and everywhere you looked.

After our hike, we headed up to where the Pecos river meets the Rio Grande to do some Kayaking. The rivers runs between limestone cliffs which were really neat. We came here on the recommendation of park rangers and the Kayak rental place. It did not disappoint. Our self guided tour down the Pecos and onto the Rio Grande was amazing.

Our destination was another cave dwelling with Indian pictographs which could only be reached by boat. We were the only ones out on the water. Lake Amistad is really a reservoir of the dammed up Rio Grande. The area we kayaked on was more north and so it was not like the open lake. It was still pretty wide and deep though.

It was so peaceful to be out there alone on the beautiful water surrounded by amazing cliffs. I was also able to make my first trip to Mexico by Kayak. The border between Texas and Mexico is designated by the Rio Grande. Once we got onto the Rio Grande, we found a spot that was not completely enclosed by cliffs so I could climb out and stand on Mexico. I felt so sneaky, especially because we had to pass through border control stops a couple times as we drove around the area.
(I was 20 weeks pregnant at this point and my swimming suit was rather tight and uncomfortable the whole time.)

On our way back to the dock, we found this little inlet and break in the cliffs. Being the adventurers that we are, we paddles up it. It was a perfect swimming spot! We were able to pull the kayak up on the rocks and get out and swim in this beautiful secluded area. Russ had fun jumping off the rocks into the water.

Here is the beautiful sunset from the last night of our trip.

And here is a picture of me breaking camp. I think I'm rolling up sleeping bags.

These are two of my favorite things we pass while driving there and back. The red barn thingy is just that, a barn. But this is no ordinary barn. This is the Beverage Barn. There was at least one of these in every little town we passed through. Pretty much, at least from what we could tell, it is a barn you drive through for drinks. The inside walls are lined with vending machines and refrigerators. I wish we had stopped. This second picture is just a sign we found amusing. It says "Prison Area: Do not pick up hitchhikers".

Needless to say we had a fantastic weekend.
